Dee's Not Okay (Fanfic Concept)
02/14/2026
>>BACK<<Last year was when I discovered two pieces of media that my life currently revolves around: Metal Family and My Chemical Romance. Admittedly, I discovered Metal Family first. But it was when I watched Dee's Q&A and he mentioned the band that I was prompted to start listening to MCR. And I loved it, of course.
But listening to Sleep by MCR, which reminded me of Dee, gave me a story concept. A prophetic nightmare was keeping Dee up at night, one where a horrifying monster forms from the blood of his dead family, chasing him down a dark hallway. He'd wake up before he can grab a gun hanging at the very end of the hallway, and this would repeat every night.
I wasn't able to do much with this concept until I remembered that I didn't really like the Addams Family Netflix reboot. And when I hate some piece of media, I don't just hate it. I liked to go on YouTube and seek answers to why it sucks, what critiques other people have, and what I can do to write it better. I did that for Wednesday, and I realized that the way to fix it was to give the storyline to the Metal Family instead of making it an Addams Family story.
My reasoning for this is simple. The Addams Family and the Metal Family, though two very similar families and franchises, have key differences. The Addams Family was made to be just purely a comedy, a satire of society and expectations of a nuclear suburban family. Nothing more. Metal Family does that as well, as it's inspired by The Addams Family, but aside from being comedic, there is also drama, which the Wednesday series has a lot of. One of the critiques of the Wednesday series is that the drama and storyline of that series is out of character for the Addams Family. But it would be more in character for The Metal Family. It's uncharacteristic for Wednesday to have some issues with her mother, as they've never been portrayed with having conflict with each other in the source material, as it's the main point of the Addams Family that they're a loving and healthy family despite being "weird". But Dee and Glam have been portrayed to have conflicts with each other (see Season 1 Episode 7), so it would make sense to build on that conflict and possibly write a resolution to that conflict.
So not only will Dee have nightmares, but he will also be shipped to boarding school in the fanfic... fun!
Let's get back to the fanfic. As of now, I've thought of a lot of concepts on the worldbuilding, added characters, and details of the main plot. I am in the process of writing Chapter 1, but I am nowhere near finished. See, I am currently a college student and I spend most of my time doing assignments. As the Trimester starts once again, I'm afraid I will definitely lose momentum. But I've realized that I can possibly motivate myself into finishing the fanfic by sharing my ideas for the fanfic, which I will do.
The fanfic will take place sometime in the present canon, where Dee gets busted by the principal for his illegal academic dishonesty buisness and that leads to him being kicked out of school. Glam decides to send him to a boarding school, St. Julian's Academic Institute, where he himself had actually graduated High School before attending the conservatory. At that time, St. Julian's was actually struggling financially. Despite it being a private school, its reputation suffered after a murder took place at the school many years ago. Since the school was desperate to improve its reputation, Dee was eagerly accepted as a student because he was a consistent valedictorian and was even given a scholarship, but under the condition that he'll compete in scholarly competitions.
This, however, is not a punishment, or at least Glam says it isn't. He calls it a consequence. But Dee definitely feels punished, as he's very much upset about this whole situation, and rightfully so. He'll be sent far away from home, to an entirely new environment where everything and everyone is different and he won't be allowed to use his phone or computer out of curfew. That last part especially, for a boy who loves programming and technology and staying up late, is torture. And to top it all off, Dee decides to confess his love to Lif before leaving, and Lif rejects and friendzones him.
So no, he's not okay.
And like Wednesday, there will also be a lot of supernatural aspects to the fanfic. Dee will have an ability.... what exactly? I'm not sure, but I have three choices.
- He's a Witch!
- He Can See Ghosts!
- A Third Option?
See, this idea is pretty cool. For one, I feel Harry Potter has truly fucked with so many people's perception of witchcraft, and it's possible it was like that even before Harry Potter. These days, people think "witch" and "wizard" are gendered terms when they are most definitely not and I find it terribly sexist. It'd be really cool to write something about a male witch finding out his powers, and would make for a good allegory for breaking out of toxic masculinity.
Technically, this would count as a warlock or necromancer and something that can still fall under "witchcraft." But the idea of Dee seeing ghosts specifically is the concept I started with when writing for the fanfic. It's especially to do with the residues of a curse cast upon Glam's bloodline specifically that broke when he left. Still considering it...
I'll think of it soon... or I forgor.
Dee having a supernatural ability especially is important to the story as one defining episode of his character, episode 7, touches on his lack of talent. It's a way of somehow compensating for that, for Dee wanting to be something extraordinary deep inside, but in a twisted way that turns out to be more of a responsibility that he never considered before.
And so far, this is all I got. But I will definitely update more on this au... still haven't thought of a short name for it.
